What is the Chinese Almanac (黄历)
The Chinese Almanac, also known as Huangli (黄历) or Tong Shu (通书), is a traditional Chinese calendar that layers folk wisdom on top of thelunar calendar. It is built on the lunisolar calendar — moon phases define months, solar terms define the year, and leap months keep everything in sync — then adds daily auspicious/inauspicious activities, spirits and directions, and favorable hours.
While modern people may not take it literally, the almanac remains an important part of Chinese cultural heritage and is still widely used for choosing auspicious dates for weddings, business openings, ground-breaking ceremonies and other important events.
